Last night we went to a fun restaurant on Upshur Street in DC. There were four intimate tables on the street and a clear glass front to welcome you into Domku Cafe.
There was one server on, but we got there early and had her undivided attention for the first half of our meal. This made it easy to ask for a taste of a new wine or ask those potentially embarrassing 'what is this ingredient' on the menu.
The butterflies and chandaliers mixed with the ecletic table settings created a casual fun atmostphere. Greg, Kaela and I greed it would be a cool bar to just sit around and chat on evenings.
We started the night off with pate and eggplant. Two things I love. The eggplant had a heavy dose of garlic, and accompianed by cracker like bread.
We shared the swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, cream sauce and fruit puree. It was an interesting balance of flavors, but slightly on the bland side for my personal taste.
Another dish was the dumplings. These were packed potatoes boiled and then heaped with carmalized onion, barley and other items. It created a delightful burst of flavors that seemed slightly different with each bite.
Our last dish was crepes filled with portebello mushrooms, spinich and barley with a light cheese sauce. While interesting for its unique origins. The presentation and flvors were again balanced and subtle. This was the lightest of the meals, but still more then a serving.
We left over stuffed but happy. This is one I would recommend to small parties who wish for a night out and a change up from burgers and fries.
