US Independence Day

Today celebrates the United States' Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776.

Fun Facts

Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. The written declaration of independence was dated July 4, 1776, but was not signed until August 2.*

In 1870, congress made Independence Day a federal holiday, though many states were already celebrating it.
