This weekend we decided to celebrate our 30th birthday's with an outing into the hills of Virginia. The first stop was Belmont Farms Distillery which still makes white corn whiskey also known as moonshine. Their label is white lightning. They had a tour to show you the whole process and even let you see their licence to make them legal no a days. The owner loves to tell the stories of his family running the whiskey when it was not legal.
Next up was Prince Michel Winery. It was a wide selection of good spirits, and for just $5 we added a couple more to the tasting list. This gave us 25 tastings and a souvenir wine glass. After all that tasking, we had lunch on their porch area overlooking a garden.
On a whim we noticed a brochure with a castle one it and decided to try a new spot. So off to Castle Gruen we went. Not exactly wine to Kat's tastes, but Greg and Kaela like a few. Tim had fun chatting with the owner about the process he used and the different set up he had. It is a family run winery with small plots of vines around the area. He also had a recent litter of kittens for Gertie to play with.
The oner of Castle Gruen directed us to another stop on our way home, Old House Vineyards. This quaint little spot is an original old farm house overlooking the vineyards and pond. out front they have large rocking chairs and a large chess board for kids to play with. Inside we found friendly staff and good tasting wines. At several points during our tasting folks would come in get a bottle and settle into one of the many rooms or on the deck to quietly sip their spirits.
We got a glass to go and headed down to the pond for a quite early evening experience. After just a couple minutes we heard the faint sounds of music coming from behind the old house. Sure enough they had a band playing that night. We sat listening to the birds, bugs, wind, and soft music for quite a while.
Finally though we got restless, and headed back to Burke, VA for some good Bar-B-Q.
